What is CNC Machining?
CNC, or computer numerical control machining, is a widely used manufacturing process that uses automated, high-speed cutting tools to form designs from metal or plastic stock. Standard CNC machines include 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling machines, lathes, and routers. Machines may vary in how CNC parts are cut-the workpiece may remain in place while the tool moves, the tool may remain in place while the workpiece is rotated and moved, or both the cutting tool and workpiece may move together.
Skilled machinists operate a CNC machine by programming tool paths based on the geometry of the final machined parts. The part geometry information is provided by a CAD (computer-aided design) model. CNC machines can cut almost any metal alloy and rigid plastic with high precision and repeatability, making custom machined parts suitable for nearly every industry, including aerospace, medical, robotics, electronics, and industrial. Titanium is extremely strong and boasts a high strength-to-weight ratio. It also has excellent corrosion resistance, high operating temperatures (up to 1,000°F) and is nontoxic. Another key benefit of titanium is its low thermal expansion and high melting point that is roughly 3,000 degrees F.
Machining titanium will be more costly than other metals such as aluminum due to it being more difficult to manufacture and machine. In terms of appearance, titanium's color varies depending on how much it has been altered. It can range from dull gray in raw form to shiny silver when smooth.

Titanium Applications
Titanium is also one of the most common metals on Earth, but its melting point is so high it's difficult to process it into a usable product. That's a big reason why it is more expensive than other metals. Titanium parts have additional cost implications because they are difficult to machine. Titanium is known for its strength and has a high strength-to-weight ratio. It also offers excellent corrosion resistance and equally poor electrical conductor.
One of titanium's pluses is low thermal expansion. With a melting point of about 3,000 degrees F (1,660 degrees C), when exposed to heat, it maintains its form better. Moreover, rather than absorb heat, titanium likes to reflect it, so you'll find it in low-E windows, bouncing back warming infrared rays from the sun.
In terms of appearance, titanium's color varies depending on how much it has been altered. It can range from dull gray in raw form to shiny silver when smooth. The titanium used in our process is Ti 6Al4V, more commonly referred to as Ti 6-4. It has mechanical properties similar to Ti grade 23 annealed and has exceptional tensile strength.
